Tadano Launches AC 5.250-2 All-Terrain Crane With New Features
A couple of years after Tadano first demoed its new AC 5.250-2 at the Bauma 2022 trade show in Munich, Germany, the manufacturer continues to refine the feature set of the 5-axle all-terrain crane. Tadano says the crane is in the final stretch of development for its launch.
The AC 5.250-2’s technological and safety features include the standard IC‑1 Plus crane control system, an optional Surround View camera system, and an upcoming Lift Adjuster feature. The Tadano AC 5.250-2 has a 250-tonne (276-U.S.-ton) maximum lifting capacity, a telescoping boom length of 13.4 to 70 metres (44 to 230 feet), a 115-m (377-ft) maximum tip height, and an 88-m (289-ft) max load radius.
Tadano’s IC-1 Plus Control System
The IC-1 Plus crane control system reports the crane’s maximum lifting capacity in real time per factors such as its slewing angle, amount of counterweight, and outrigger deployment length, among others. The AC 5.250-2 can extend its outriggers asymmetrically by quarter lengths to fit the available space in a cramped work site, and IC-1 Plus helps make the most of the crane’s abilities in such situations.
“Thanks to the IC-1 Plus crane control system, which comes as standard, the available radius can even be significantly increased at certain slewing angles,” says Project Manager Peter Kleinhans.
To conserve fuel, IC-1 Plus can regulate engine speed to the requirements of the job using Eco Mode. A start-stop button, another fuel-saving feature, can turn the engine off while keeping the control software active.
Tadano Safety Features
The AC 5.250-2’s optional Surround View system uses six cameras to give the operator 360-degree visibility, making it easier to spot pedestrians and cyclists while driving and turning.
“With Tadano Surround View, crane operators can take a look at a display in the cab to know exactly how they need to position the crane at their work site in order to extend all outriggers sufficiently and ensure that they are using the required counterweight tailswing radius,” says Kleinhans. “This eliminates tedious and time-consuming measurements and testing when looking for a location from which to operate the crane, making the latter ready for use faster.”
Another safety feature, Tadano’s unique Lift Adjuster, will become available for the AC 5.250-2 in the coming year. The Lift Adjuster compensates for the deflection of the deployed boom by adjusting the lift cylinder, ensuring the proper radius. The system also prevents the load from swinging.
Other safety selling points include a hill start assist system. This simplifies driving from an uphill start. The crane also has an extendable step and safety attachment points to help the operator move between the carrier and superstructure cabs.
Versatile AC 5.250-2 Configurations
The AC 5.250-2 can serve as a taxi crane with a 12-t (13.2-U.S.-t) axle load configuration, including transportation mounts for a boom extension if required. The crane can lift up to 67.3 t (74.2 U.S. t) on its own or use a 5.8-m (19-ft) heavy-lift runner with a few hundred kilograms of payload capacity to spare.
The Tadano AC 5.250-2 can haul up to 20 t (22 U.S. t) of its 80-t (88-U.S.-t) maximum ballast, which can be split into pieces of less than 11 t (12 U.S. t) to allow smaller trucks to haul them. This is helpful where 16.5-t (18.2-U.S.-t) axle loads are permitted. On location, the crane can pick up its full 80 t of counterweight in just three hoists if needed.
The Tadano AC 5.250-2 can lift up to 14.5 t (16 U.S. t) at a radius of 12 to 24 m (39.4 to 78.7 ft) with its 70-m (230-ft) boom fully extended. It can also lift 11 t (12.1 U.S. t) at a radius of 42 m (138 ft) with a boom length of 47 m (154 ft). Both examples outdo the crane’s competition, according to Tadano. In addition, its available 5.8- to 36-m (19- to 118-ft) main boom extensions are all self-rigging.
Mercedes-Benz Diesel Power
The AC 5.250-2 is powered by a 530-horsepower (390-kilowatt) Mercedes-Benz diesel engine with 2,600 newton-metres (1,918 pounds-foot) of torque. The motor is EU Stage V and Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant and is compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel. The mobile crane’s top road speed is 85 km/h (53 mph).
