German crane services provider Jandt Kranvermietung recently added a Liebherr LTM 1250-5.1 all-terrain crane to its fleet, and the 250-tonne (275-U.S.-ton) machine’s first job was a doozy. Jandt paired the 5-axle crane with an identical model in its fleet to unload several weighty wind turbine components in tandem from a 70-metre (230-foot) barge at the port of Berenbusch and place them on waiting transport trucks.

"With the new crane, we have added a second LTM 1250-5.1 to our fleet,” says Jandt Sales Manager Jens Lübeck. “We are very satisfied with the first one, and we can now swap equipment parts between the two machines. Another important criterion for the Liebherr 250-tonner was its outstanding lifting capacity with its strong 60-metre telescopic boom."

    One Powerful Crane

Liebherr says LTM 1250-5.1 is the world’s most powerful crane on five axles. Each LTM 1250-5.1 Jandt used to unload the wind turbine components included 88 t (97 U.S. t) of ballast and Liebherr’s VarioBallast system.

VarioBallast uses mechanically slewing ballasting cylinders that let users change between two ballast radius settings in just a few steps. The larger ballast setting is ideal for jobs requiring a higher lifting capacity, while the smaller radius setting is excellent for jobsites with tight working conditions.

    25 Cranes Strong

Founded in 1950 and based in Bielefeld in Lower Saxony, Jandt purchased its first crane in 1964. Its fleet consists of 25 cranes that work throughout Germany. Teaming its new and existing LTM 1250-5.1s to safely lift and place heavy wind turbine components, including a 98-t (108-U.S.-t) generator, required precise coordination between the cranes’ operators.

Jandt’s drivers needed roughly two hours to unload all the components, which reached the port of Berenbusch via a barge from Rotterdam. Jandt then transported the components a few kilometres on heavy-duty trucks to a construction site in Porta Westfalica for assembly.

    The Liebherr LTM 1250-5.1

Customers can equip the LTM 1250-5.1 with a folding jib, a long fixed jib, or a rigidly attached strong jib. The crane has a maximum hoist height of up to 108 m (354 ft) and a maximum radius of 96 m (315 ft). It receives power from a 6-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine rated for up to 536 horsepower (394 kilowatts).

The crane employs Liebherr’s VarioBase outrigger system, which can safely place its support outriggers asymmetrically to fit the workspace. ECOmode and ECOdrive functions help reduce fuel consumption, while an optional elevating cab can telescope upward to give the operator a better view of the load and jobsite.
