Liebherr 25 L & 33 L Compact Tower Cranes Packed With Operator Assistance Features
Liebherr has revised its L1-24 and L1-32 bottom-slewing tower cranes from the ground up, resulting in the new 25 L and 33 L. With respective lifting capacities of 5,511 pounds (2.5 metric tons) and 8,818 lbs (4 mt), the compact, fast-erecting Liebherr cranes boast the Tower Crane Operating System 2 (TCOS 2), new operator assistance systems such as Sway Control, and upgraded components. All these features, in addition to easy handling, make the 25 L and 33 L cranes attractive to rental companies, construction firms, and timber frame companies, Liebherr says.
“The L series marks the start of a new development generation and sets the standard for future products,” says Clemens Maier, product manager at Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH. “Nothing has changed in terms of the cranes’ compact dimensions and powerful performance. The new Liebherr control system provides us with new, innovative crane operator assistance systems and is optimally designed for current and future requirements.”
TCOS 2
The second generation of Liebherr’s Tower Crane Operating System, TCOS 2, has a user-friendly interface and easy menu navigation. Like the cranes themselves, Liebherr designed TCOS 2 to support future updates and retrofit new assistance systems over time. TCOS 2 has seen real-world use in Liebherr’s EC-B series top-slewing cranes since 2021.
As part of its “fresh take” on the new and improved Liebherr L-series cranes, the manufacturer upgraded their steel structures and gave them a reworked hydraulic system and a new modular drive system. The bottom-slewing cranes have the same operating concept as Liebherr’s K series to promote operator familiarity among different models. The new L- and K-series cranes also share a standardized radio frequency (RF) remote control.
Durable Liebherr Control 5 hardware makes its first appearance in the compact tower crane segment with the 25 L and 33 L. This fifth-generation control hardware, shared by Liebherr construction machines such as wheel loaders as well as its cranes, should have excellent spare parts availability well into the future, according to the manufacturer.
Sway Control, Speed2Lift & Micromove
Liebherr’s compact, fast-erecting new cranes have a standard Sway Control assistance system for active load sway damping. It automatically counteracts sway-inducing movements of the trolley or jib to help inexperienced crane operators “drive the load, not the drives,” the manufacturer says. The cranes’ Speed2Lift function can auto-select the maximum lifting speed for each load to increase load handling productivity.
Liebherr’s Micromove function is a fine-positioning mode for placing prefabricated parts and other items requiring careful precision. The operator can select a slower slewing gear mode for finer control as well. The L series cranes include a graphical slewing limitation feature that lets operators set boundaries for the jib to keep loads from colliding with buildings, power lines, and other obstacles.
Liebherr L Series Specifications
The new 25 L and 33 L Liebherr L series cranes retain the jib lengths of their L1-series forebears, namely an 82-foot (25-meter) or 88.6-ft (27-m) jib for the 25 L crane and a 98-ft (30-m) jib for the 33 L crane. Likewise, ballast and transport axle options remain the same, according to Liebherr.
With the 82-ft jib, the 25 L has a maximum hook height of 62 ft (18.9 m) and a load capacity of 2,094 lbs (950 kilograms) at full radius. The 88.6-ft jib supplies several more feet of reach and has a 1,763-lb (800-kg) lift capacity at the jib head.
The 33 L can achieve a max hook height of 69 ft (21 m) and a load capacity of 2,314 lbs (1,050 kg) at its 98-ft (30-m) maximum radius. This crane can also use two types of ballast to suit the application. The standard concrete ballast can be hauled by truck and assembled onsite, while the 33 L’s steel full ballast can be transported on the crane.
