Manitowoc’s Crane Control System Comes To Potain Luffing-Jib Cranes In New MR 229
The new Potain MR 229 tower crane is the manufacturer’s first luffing-jib tower crane to include parent company Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) operating system. The 14-tonne (15.4-U.S.-ton) capacity, top-slewing MR 229 also has a reduced out-of-service radius so it can coexist with other tower cranes on high-rise projects for a more efficient work site.
UK crane rental company Radius Group recently erected the first Potain MR 229 in a new, 476-home housing project in London in the U.K.
The Potain MR 229 Is An Efficiency Upgrade
The Radius Group’s high-rise project for the L&Q Group housing association is located on London’s Greenwich Peninsula. Radius Group originally used four Potain MR 225 A cranes but replaced one of those with the new, more efficient MR 229 as soon as it became available.
The newest Potain is configured with a 50-metre (164-foot) jib and 37.5 m (123 ft) of height under hook, along with a 75HLP35 High Performance Lifting winch. A 110HPL35 winch is also available for the new MR 229.
The three remaining Potain MR 225 A cranes working on the housing project are kitted out with 40-m (131-ft) jibs and are configured on fixing angles. The cranes can erect and dismantle each other, obviating the need to rent mobile cranes and sidestepping said expense.
Radius Group expects the cranes to remain in operation until Q4 2025 and estimates project completion in 2027.
The MR 229’s Short Out-Of-Service Radius
Potain says the new MR 229 are ideal for high-rise jobsites with space constraints. It can be set up with 30- to 55-m (98- to 180-ft) jib lengths. At 55 m, the crane’s full reach, the MR 229 can lift a maximum tip load of 2.7 t (2.98 U.S. t), a remarkable feat. Depending on the selected jib length, the new tower crane’s out-of-service radius is just 10 or 12 m (32.8 or 39.4 ft).
Operators can use Manitowoc’s CCS to configure the MR 229, calibrate its crane movement sensors, and set its jib length in just 15 minutes, helping jobs get started sooner. Manitowoc says he CCS has a user-friendly graphic display and ergonomic controls including a jog dial for simple navigation and data input. The control system works consistently across Manitowoc, Grove, and Potain product lines for simpler serviceability and operator familiarisation.
The Potain MR 229 also supports Potain Connect telematics for fleet management, daily task facilitation, and a more efficient service and maintenance regimen. The tower crane uses the Potain Cab-IN elevator to lift the operator safely and conveniently to its cabin.
