Wasel Updates Fleet With New Liebherr All-Terrain Cranes
German crane operator Wasel, a subsidiary of the Hagedorn Group, is in the midst of a fleet upgrade and continually turns to cranes from Liebherr. Wasel acquired a Liebherr LTM 1110-5.2 all-terrain crane with the LICCON3 control system and an LTM 1750-9.1 in October and will soon add an LTM 1100-5.3 and an electrically driven LTC 1050-3.1E.
A Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane is also on its way, marking the third LR 11000 added to the fleet in two years. The modernizing of the fleet is far from over, the company says the addition of 20 more cranes is already in the works.
Electric Drive & Other Crane Technologies
Among Wasel’s recent additions are cranes that feature new technology, such as the LICCON3 control system and an electric drive. “Wasel was and remains a pioneer of new technologies,” says Managing Director Matthias Wasel. “We can't afford to ignore innovations because they ultimately move our industry forward. Control technology plays an important role in this. Especially if the basis for future developments is laid in the process.”
The LTC 1050-3.1E, Liebherr’s first electrically driven mobile crane, has a 72kW electric motor, with performance nearly identical to the 6-cylinder engine. It joins 12 LTC cranes already in Wasel’s fleet.
The cranes are frequently used indoors, where fumes and noise are an issue. The electric LTC will be used for indoor jobs. “Alongside occupational safety, sustainability is one of our main goals and is also increasingly demanded by our customers. The electric version of the compact Liebherr 50-tonne crane is an important step for us in this respect,” says Wasel.
Wind Power Drives Liebherr Crane Choice
The increased popularity of wind power factored into the company’s choice to add another LR 11000 crawler crane. Wind turbines keep getting bigger, requiring larger cranes, Wasel explains. The LR 11000 has a transport width of 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) and a transport height of 3.2 m (10.5 ft).
The new V-frame has an adjustment distance of 17 m (56 ft) and moves the derrick ballast into position to reduce the work of ballast handling. Its maximum load capacity of 1,089 tonnes (1,200 U.S. tons) and maximum hoist height of 220 m (722 ft) make it ideal for jobs in infrastructure, wind power, industrial construction, and port handling.
