Sicilian Rental Company Selects Grove GMK6400-1 All-Terrain Crane For Wind Farm Projects

Mandalà Noleggi has a long history of supplying high-quality lifting equipment and services to construction sites, industrial facilities, renewable energy projects, and shipyards. The Sicilian rental company recently added a Grove GMK6400-1 all-terrain crane primarily for wind farm projects, many of which are located onshore or just off the coast of Sicily. Grove parent company Manitowoc designed the six-axle, 400-tonne (450-U.S.-ton) crane with a number of key improvements over its GMK6400 predecessor, and Mandalà Noleggi took note.

“We were really impressed with the GMK6400-1, especially the upgrades it offers over the previous GMK6400,” says Mandalà Noleggi General Manager Giuseppe Mandalà. “It has now added the Crane Control System (CCS) and also the MAXbase variable outrigger system. Having these additional features means increased capacities on the main boom, and it’s a crane that is fast and easy to set up, so we can get through more work in a day.”

What’s New

The CCS system that attracted Mandalà Noleggi to the GMK6400-1 provides a user interface, a graphic display, ergonomic controls, and a jog dial to simplify operation. The crane’s MAXbase variable outrigger positioning system helps speed up assembly by allowing the outriggers to extend in various symmetric or asymmetric lengths when obstacles prevent them from fully extending. Other new features on the GMK6400-1 include an improved hydraulic system with faster flow, as well as a new engine that is compliant with both Tier 4 Final and Euromot 5 emissions standards.

MegaWingLift & Wind Farm Work

The Grove GMK6400-1 can be equipped with an optional self-rigging MegaWingLift attachment. Manitowoc indicates the MegaWingLift boosts the lift capacity of the crane’s 60-metre (197-foot) five-section boom by as much as 70%, which makes the GMK6400-1 particularly effective when operating at steeper boom angles. The MegaWingLift attachment can be ready in less than 20 minutes and doesn’t require an assist crane.
