Singapore Loves The 300-Tonne Grove GMK6300L-1 All-Terrain Crane, Says Crane Hire Firm Hiap Heng

Heavy-equipment hire company Hiap Heng of Singapore purchased its first Grove crane last year, taking ownership of a 300-tonne (350-U.S.-ton) Grove GMK6300L-1 all-terrain model in December. The crane has an 80-metre (262-foot), seven-section Megaform main boom and a maximum tip height of 120 m (393 ft).

“The 300-tonne all-terrain cranes from Grove are very well known in Singapore,” says a spokesperson for Hiap Heng. “First the GMK6300L, and now the GMK6300L-1 are often requested by name due to both their capability and reliability. So, it made sense for us to add this crane to the fleet.”

Versatile Reach

For its first job, the GMK6300L-1 headed to Jurong Island to perform maintenance tasks at a petrochemical plant.

“We were really impressed with the long boom and also purchased the optional 21-m fly jib to give us even greater reach,” the spokesperson continues. “With this new addition, we can fully support a wider range of customer projects.” Hiap Heng says the crane will likely be used for high-rise construction projects and infrastructure work.

The Grove GMK6300L-1

Grove’s GMK6300L-1 improves upon the lifting capacities of its GMK6300L predecessor by an average of 7%, and by more than 16% with the main boom extended to between 70 and 80 m (230 to 262 ft) in length. At 80 m of main boom and with its full brace of counterweight, the GMK6300L-1 can lift up to 14 t (15.4 U.S. t) between 14- and 28-m (46- and 92-ft) radii, as compared with 12 t (13.2 U.S. t) for the GMK6300L.

Two Mercedes engines power the GMK6300L-1, with a 577-horsepower (430-kilowatt) unit in the carrier and a 282-HP (210-kW) power plant in the superstructure. The carrier has a fully automatic transmission by Allison. The 158,700-pound (72,000-kilogram) crane can be driven on the road with up to 21 t (23 U.S. t) of counterweight.

The GMK6300L-1’s chassis features a Megatrak suspension and all-wheel steering. Its counterweight slabs are interchangeable with other Grove mobile cranes including the GMK5180-1, GMK5200-1, GMK5250L-1, and GMK5250XL-1.
