The Gallozzi Group’s Salerno Container Terminal (SCT) in southern Italy reports that it added a new Liebherr LHM 600 High Rise mobile harbour crane to its fleet in December. The elevated-cab crane has a load capacity of up to 208 tonnes (229 U.S. tons) and can serve ships of up to New-Panamax size.

The new LHM 600 HR is the fifth Liebherr LHM-series crane at the Salerno port; SCT says it will perform container operations around the clock. The terminal’s management touts the crane’s reliability and flexibility, along with its trustworthy service support, as some of the reasons behind the purchase.

“Our use of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes has been invaluable in maintaining a strong operational efficiency and commercial capacity,” says SCT President Agostino Gallozzi.

    Height, Power & Reach

SCT’s latest LHM 600 HR is equipped with a 12-metre (39-foot) tower extension and has a higher cabin height of 37.1 m (122 ft) to give the operator a more commanding view of the cargo and the surrounding area. The High Rise version of the crane has an elevated pivot point, which along with the crane’s extended range allows it to serve larger vessels and more shipping container rows.

The Salerno port’s newest Liebherr has an outreach of 58 m (190 ft) and enough lifting power to hoist two containers at once using its VDL twin-lift spreaders with a capacity of 2 x 32.5 t (2 x 35.8 U.S. t).

SCT’s other Liebherr mobile harbour cranes include two LHM 800 HR and two LHM 600 HR models.

“Our continued investment in these machines has helped us achieve targeted growth and maintain a much stronger connectivity index,” Gallozzi says, referring to the inbound and outbound cargo traffic the port can sustain. SCT currently averages 21 weekly container ship landings.

    The Liebherr LHM 600

Liebherr’s LHM 600 has a maximum jib length of 61 m (200 ft) and a total weight rating of 540 t (595 U.S. t). It can raise and lower a load at up to 120 m (394 ft) per minute, directed by Liebherr’s Litronic crane control system. The elevated cabin offers acoustic protection, a windshield wiper, and air conditioning to enhance the operator’s comfort and productivity. Bright LED work lights facilitate 24/7 operation.

The LHM 600 uses a precise, efficient hydrostatic drive. Its main functions such as lifting, turning, and luffing all utilise closed hydraulic loops. Each of the crane’s sets of rubber tyres is individually steerable, allowing the machine to turn in place. The carrier performs automatic load balancing to prevent its wheels from becoming overloaded.
