Potain MCR 295 Internal-Climbing Cranes Now Erecting Prestigious One Central Saigon Project
A pair of 25-tonne (27.6-U.S.-ton) Potain MCR 295 compact luffing jib cranes are hard at work building the One Central Saigon project in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Potain distributor Minh Chi sold the internal-climbing tower cranes to large contractor Newtecons, who put them to work on the mixed-use double skyscraper project in March 2021. Compact components and clever packaging allow each crane’s entire top-slewing section and full 60-metre (197-foot) jib to be transported in just six 12.2-m (40-ft) shipping containers.
“We have enjoyed a great deal of success with internal-climbing cranes in recent years, and the reduced cost of transport is just one of the major benefits of the Potain MCR 295,” says Newtecons Equipment Manager Nguyen Nam Duong. “Not only do the cranes save money for developers and investors, but they diversify construction options, offer a better load capacity than external models, and enhance operator safety, especially during the stormy season.”
Double Dragons
The two 200-m (656-ft) towers of the One Central Saigon project will represent the mythological dragons of Vietnamese culture watching over Ho Chi Minh City. Each tower will feature a symbolic “pearl” in the dragon’s mouth to evoke the vitality of the nation’s expanding economy.
The twin towers are joined by a seven-storey podium, which the Potain cranes have recently completed at the midpoint of the construction project. The 195,000-square-metre (2.1 million-square-foot) complex will support a six-star hotel, a shopping mall, office space, and apartments under the management of the Ritz-Carlton Saigon. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
The Potain MCR 295
Potain’s 25-t MCR 295 is designed to erect tall buildings in very obstructed areas. It has a maximum height under hook of 39.2 m (128.6 ft). The crane can lift up to 2.45 t (2.7 U.S. t) at its full 60-m radius.
The MCR 295’s VVF luffing system allows it to fully raise its jib from 15 to 86 degrees in one minute and 40 seconds. The luffing jib crane has a minimum working radius of 5 m (16.4 ft). Potain urges buyers to take a look at the crane’s impressive load curves with its unique three-fall rope reeving, which complements the model’s two- and four-fall load block reeving systems.
Using Potain’s BC60R floor-climbing mast system, the MCR 295 cranes on the Saigon project attained an initial working height of 52.2 m (171 ft), which the manufacturer says is a rare achievement amongst competing cranes. The two top-slewing cranes were equipped with an 8.3-m (27.2-ft) counter-jib to support 50 m (164 ft) of jib. At this radius, the MCR 295 can lift up to 4.5 t (5 U.S. t). The cranes will reach a final working height of 260 m (853 ft) on its 2- by 2-m (6.6- by 6.6-ft) mast sections by the end of the project.
