Rahlf-Krane GmbH, a traditional crane rental company serving the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn and the northern Schleswig-Holstein region in Germany, recently added a Liebherr LTM 1160-5.2 all-terrain crane to its fleet. The 180-tonne (198-U.S.-ton) crane is the eighth from Liebherr that the company has acquired in eight years and is the most powerful crane in Rahlf’s fleet. Jürgen Rahlf opened Rahlf-Krane in 1977 as a boat-lifting business. Today the company has 12 cranes and does everything from boat loading to home and commercial construction.

"Apart from its enormous lifting capacity, the fact that the LTM 1160-5.2 is only 2.75 metres (9 feet) wide was a decisive factor in our decision,” says owner Alexander Rahlf. “It is the only crane in its load class on the market with this width. This is a big advantage for us, because the roads in our rural region are often very narrow."

    About The LTM 1160-5.2

Rahlf purchased the LTM 1160-5.2 to replace an LTM 1130-5.1. The crane is a UK counterweight variant that was developed to meet special axle-load requirement in the UK, but Rahlf felt it met his firm’s needs. "The 3.5-t base plate can be carried on the crane,” he says. “We can transport the remaining 50 t of counterweight on two permit-free standard trucks. For many crane jobs, one truck is enough. This enables us to cover the previous 130-t range."

Rahlf-Krane began as a boat lifting business. Here the company’s LTM 1100-5.2 lifts a boat into the water on the island of Fehmarn. (Photo courtesy of Liebherr.)

The crane’s single-engine concept transfers power from the undercarriage to the superstructure using a mechanical shaft. The five-axle crane offers multiple boom configurations and has a maximum load capacity of 180 t, a 62-m (203-ft) telescopic boom, and a max hoist height of 99 m (325 ft). The LTM 1160-5.2 has ECOmode and ECODrive technologies to reduce fuel consumption and the VarioBallast system to manage high lifting capacities with a large ballast radius and a smaller radius for work in tight spaces.
