Tadano Announces Sustainability Goals & Technology To Help Meet Them

Tadano recently announced its commitment to environmental protection and its plans to reduce carbon emissions in both business operations and its products. “In addition to supporting the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the Tadano Group has established the clear goal that by 2030, we will reduce CO2 emissions from our business activities worldwide by 25% and our products by 35%,” says Tadano Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Toshiaki Ujiie.

To achieve its environmental goals, Tadano will gradually covert its fleet to use zero-emission or reduced-emission engine technologies, including the electrohydraulic E-Pack and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) compatibility, which are already available on select models.

    About The E-Pack

The ESTA-award-winning E-Pack can be connected to 400 V outlets with 63 A or 32 A and has an integrated 32-kilowatt electric motor for quiet, emission-free operation. The E-Pack is currently available on AC 3.045-1 City and AC 4.080-1 cranes with plans to expand to more models, which will make the E-Pack an even more cost-effective choice.

The optional unit is ideal for crane operations inside buildings, in dense urban areas, for night work in residential areas, or any other place that may have strict emission and noise requirements that would prevent traditional diesel-powered cranes from operating.

“We’re already assuming that the number of requests for quotations asking for zero-emission operation, or at least significantly reduced emissions, will keep growing in the future,” says Frank Schröder, all-terrain crane product line vice president. “In fact, that’s already the case in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. And with the E-Pack, our customers will be perfectly prepared.”

    Reduced-Emission Fuels

All Tadano HK superstructure engines, all CC lattice boom crawler cranes, the GTC-1800EX telescopic boom crawler crane, and most of the all-terrain cranes can be operated with paraffinic and synthetically produced diesel fuels, such as HVO, liquid natural gas, and biomass fuels, in conformity with DIN 15940 without the need to make any modifications.

HVO, a fuel based on vegetable oils and animal fats, can be created using waste from food production, has almost the same energy density as diesel, and is nearly carbon-neutral from production to combustion.

“Even if HVO is not available everywhere, we consider it an effective option for reducing particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions in existing vehicles and allowing for operations with significantly reduced emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our products and beyond,” says Tadano Demag GmbH and Tadano Faun GmbH President & CEO Jens Ennen. “That’s why Tadano will be gradually switching its plants over to renewable fuels so as to keep the emissions from our cranes as low as possible starting from the actual production process.”
