Soma Training Acquires Grove GMK3060-1 All-Terrain Crane For Instructional Use
Lifting operations courses provider Soma Training teaches students on the most up-to-date models of cranes and relies heavily on Manitowoc’s brands. The 27-hectare Harderwijk facility attracts new crane operators from across the Netherlands and recently added a two-year-old Grove GMK3060-1 all-terrain crane to the mix. The new crane, which replaced an older crane from a competing brand, will be used in Soma’s mobile crane courses.
“Soma replaced its 35-tonne two-axle crane with our 60-tonne capacity, three-axle GMK, which more closely aligns with the trends and preferences in today’s rental market,” says Erik Baas, Manitowoc’s sales manager for mobile cranes in the Netherlands. “This ensures new entrants into the industry will benefit from getting practical experience in a crane that’s closer to what they’ll eventually encounter in the real world. The crane is also fully compliant with the latest requirements, whether that’s Stage V engine emission standards or the latest EN13000 regulations. And, by incorporating our intuitive Crane Control System (CCS), it becomes much easier to understand and work with too.”
About Soma Training
Soma’s students come from the maritime, offshore, infrastructure, and lifting sectors and receive instruction in theoretical and practical operations as required to obtain the crane operator license required by Dutch law. The training centre has been teaching operators of mobile telescopic cranes, crawler cranes, and self-erecting and top-slewing tower cranes for over 70 years.
About The GMK3060-1
The GMK3060-1 has a 40-metre (131-foot) main boom and a 7-m (23-ft) jib. The all-terrain crane has a six-section Twin-Lock pinning Megaform boom and a compact three-axle chassis that enables it to work in tight quarters. The GMK also includes the CCS, Manitowoc’s standardised operating platform. Other features include the Megatrak suspension system, hydraulic counterweight removal system, and a Tier 4i Mercedes diesel engine.
“It’s a perfect machine to train operators on, especially with the remote control for all crane functions,” says Soma’s planning coordinator Jeroen Boekelo. “This makes it much easier for them to set up without any help. It’s almost as compact as a two-axle crane too, but with the Megatrak independent suspension system, it rides more like a Grand Tourer! We are so happy with our new Grove crane – it’s a perfect fit for our needs.”
