Hiab Launches iX.162 HiPro Knuckle Boom Loader Crane, With ePTO Option Coming Soon
Hiab launched its new iX.162 HiPro medium-range loader crane at the IAA Transportation conference (formerly IAA Commercial Vehicles) in Hanover, Germany, being held now through 25 September. The remote-controlled crane is designed for applications such as loading and unloading bricks, blocks, and other building materials.
The new iX.162 HiPro is lighter in weight and has a greater lifting capacity than its antecedent, Hiab’s X-HiPro 162. The crane also comes with the new SPACEevo control system. Starting in 2023, the iX.162 HiPro will become available with a unique, self-contained electric power take-off (ePTO) option with independent power.
“These are the next-generation loader cranes—lighter and stronger than their predecessors,” says Hiab Product Manager Medium Range, Loader Cranes, Light & Medium, Leif Törnblom. “This allows the truck to increase its payload and lower its fuel consumption when the vehicle is not fully loaded.”
Specifications
Depending on configuration, the new iX.162 HiPro’s lifting capacity class is 153.2 to 163.5 tonne-metres (495 to 528 U.S. ton-force feet), an increase of more than 10%, according to Hiab. The crane offers a hydraulic extension outreach of 6.5 to 11 metres (21.3 to 36 feet) and a manual outreach of 8.5 to 13.2 m (27.9 to 43.3 ft). The new Hiab is up to 370 kilograms (816 pounds) lighter than its X-HiPro 162 predecessor at 1,440 to 1,710 kg (3,175 to 3,770 lbs).
Hiab routed the iX.162 HiPro’s pipes and hoses through the body of the crane for protection. In turn, the steel body is protected by nDurance paint.
SPACEevo
Hiab says its SPACEevo control system provides rapid yet smooth crane movements, potentially allowing for more lifting operations each day. The system works in conjunction with various sensors to detect dangerous operation and attempts to avoid accidents.
SPACEevo is compatible with Hiab’s optional, advanced CombiDrive4 remote control as well as new stabiliser leg configurations, options, and accessories. The control system is based on an open platform and can be upgraded with new features, Hiab says.
Independent ePTO Option
A version of the iX.162 HiPro with an integrated ePTO will be available in early 2023. Its space-saving design places the battery pack and electric power unit on the base of the crane. Because the ePTO is independently powered, the engine of the truck can be turned off while the crane is operating.

No additional weight is added when you go electric with Hiab—this makes it a real sustainable option.”
