Liebherr Updates LHM Mobile Harbour Cranes With Digital Upgrades, Operator Comfort Features
Liebherr has introduced its newly redesigned range of LHM series mobile harbour cranes. The LHM series includes models suitable for offloading shipping containers at inland ports as well as cranes that can handle oceangoing ships up to 22 rows wide, including Megamax, Capesize, and Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
Liebherr has given the LHM the new Master V crane control system, as well as advanced sensors that transmit more data. This more digital and networkable generation of LHM cranes comes with video cameras in additional key places and an ergonomically improved operator's cab. Liebherr also enhanced the cranes’ hybrid power system, Pactronic 2.0, and made a few cosmetic changes to the exterior graphics.
Hybrid Power
The LHM series starts with the LHM120 with a 42-tonne (46-U.S.-ton) load capacity and tops out with the 308-t (340-U.S.-t) LHM 800. The latter flagship model can lift its full capacity at 18 metres (59 feet) of outreach and up to 100 t (110 U.S. t) at 47 m (154 ft).
Liebherr designed its Master V crane control system to support upcoming assistance features and partial automation systems for the LHM range. The control system runs on its own power circuit so it can monitor the crane even when the engine is switched off. The X-shaped outrigger base of an LHM model now comes with new angle sensors so the control system can capitalise on the stability the beams provide in their deployed position.
The fuel-saving, second-generation Pactronic 2.0 hybrid system stores spare hydraulic power (either from the main drive unit or by lowering a load) in an accumulator. By tapping into this stored power as needed, an LHM crane can expand its performance envelope without the need for a larger engine. Pactronic 2.0’s Boost mode can double lifting and lowering operation speeds, allowing an LHM crane to perform a cycle in less than 100 seconds, Liebherr says. In Green mode, the hybrid system can cut fuel consumption by up to 30% while reducing emissions.
User Convenience
Inside the new maritime cabin of an LHM crane, the operator will notice that the machine’s control lever has been combined with the armrest of the seat for ergonomics and productivity. An uprated HVAC system demists the large windows quickly and maintains a comfortable climate in the cab. A new, built-in touchscreen brings all the crane’s functions within easy reach. Nearby is a new bottle cooler to keep a beverage chilled.
An LHM crane travels using a hydrostatic transmission and a precise, stepless drive. Each of its numerous sets of rubber tyres is individually steerable, even allowing the big machine to turn in place. The carrier performs automatic load balancing so that none of its wheels becomes overloaded.
