Switzerland’s Clausen Kran AG Acquires Liebherr LTM 1150-5.3 & LRT 1090-2.1 Cranes

Swiss crane and special transport provider Clausen Kran AG of Brig, Valais, Switzerland, has added to its small fleet of Liebherr cranes with a 150-tonne (170-U.S.-ton) LTM 1150-5.3 all-terrain model and a 90-t (100-U.S.-t) LRT 1090-2.1 rough-terrain crane.

“I have a high regard for Liebherr's modern crane technology, as I myself use the vehicles nearly every day,” says Clausen Kran co-owner Geri Clausen.

The Liebherr LTM 1150-5.3

Clausen Kran plans to use its new LTM 1150-5.3 to assemble and dismantle construction cranes and to perform high lifts in chemical plant applications. Its telescopic boom is quite long at 66 metres (216.5 feet), something it has in common with heavier 200-t (220-U.S.-t)-class cranes. With the help of a lattice jib, the LTM 1150-5.3 can achieve a maximum hoist height of 92 m (302 ft).

“The LTM 1150-5.3 is a powerful all-rounder allowing flexible use thanks to its variable driving conditions,” Clausen says. “Its five axles make it very compact and manoeuvrable. With the detachable boom, it also offers a great advantage for a variety of operations in our mountainous region.”

Access to local power station and cable car projects involves limits on the weight of the cranes that can be brought to bear by Clausen Kran. The LTM 1150-5.3 weighs 31 t (34 U.S. t) with its optional detachable boom and sliding beams removed, simplifying the process to secure permits for the routes. The model can act as a taxi crane and show up ready to work with 9 t (9.9 U.S. t) of ballast and a per-axle load of 12 t (13.2 U.S. t).

In addition, the LTM 1150-5.3 has high load charts in a steep position. Liebherr says it designed the crane with a single engine in order to make way for a longer boom with higher lift capacity. Its maximum radius is 72 m (236 ft).

The LTM 1150-5.3 includes Liebherr’s VarioBase feature, which allows the crane to maximise its lifting capacity even with its outriggers deployed asymmetrically, such as within an irregular, tight space.

The Liebherr LRT 1090-2.1

“The LRT 1090-2.1 rough-terrain crane is an ideal addition to our crane fleet, enabling us to offer our customers customised solutions for their projects,” says co-owner Cornelia Clausen-Ogi.

The company’s unit was the first LRT 1090-2.1 in Switzerland, Liebherr says. The two-axle, rope-pull crane has a maximum lifting height of 66 m and a maximum radius of 50 m (164 ft). Its 47-m (154-ft) boom can use two fixed telescoping paths: one for power and one for length. The boom is extended via a two-stage hydraulic cylinder and a rope extension mechanism. A double folding jib is an option.

Liebherr says it designed the LRT 1090-2.1 for safety. The crane automatically monitors its sliding beams so it can detect whether it is being supported by its outriggers or by its tyres only. It then reports this information to the crane control system to modify its load limits. The LRT 1090-2.1 also comes with the VarioBase variable outrigger extension system as standard.
