Liebherr Wins ESTA Safety Award For Its 441-Ton LR 1400 SX Crawler Crane
Liebherr’s 441-ton (400-metric-ton) LR 1400 SX lattice boom crawler crane has won this year’s ESTA Award in the Safety category. ESTA is the European association of oversize and overweight road transport and mobile cranes.
“Safety was always an important part of our product development,” says Liebherr-Werk Nenzing Managing Director for Sales Gerhard Frainer. “In recent years, we have focused even more strongly on this with digital solutions and assistance systems.”
Manufactured by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH in Austria, the new LR 1400 SX is the second crawler crane in as many years from the facility to win an award.
“It is important for us that those who operate our cranes feel safe on the jobsite,” says Frainer. “We want to continue to successfully follow this path.”
Safety Aids
The Liebherr LR 1400 SX’s Gradient Travel Aid assistance system monitors its center of gravity on a slope or incline. It alerts the operator when the crane is approaching a tipping point or unsafe area. An active Load Moment Limiter maintains safety while driving with a load on the hook.
Likewise, the LR 1400 SX’s Ground Pressure Visualization feature can notify the driver when the machine is in or coming upon a sensitive area. The system continuously consults specified safety parameters for the crane’s position in real time. Inside the cab, the ground pressure is displayed for the operator. Optional ground pressure reduction plates can spread the weight of the LR 1400 SX over a greater area.
The crane also features a Boom Up-and-Down Assistant that activates as the rising or lowering boom draws near to the tipping border. If the operator continues to move the boom into an unsafe zone, the Assistant can automatically step in to prevent it.
“The winning LR 1400 SX is only one example of maximum safety. All our cranes in the LR series are equipped with the same safety systems and fulfil the same criteria,” Frainer says. “The award is an expression of appreciation for our commitment to safe crawler cranes and construction machinery.”
The Liebherr LR 1400 SX
The LR 1400 SX crawler provides a maximum hoist height of 584 feet (178 meters) and a maximum radius of 426 ft (130 m). It has free-fall winches, modular counterweights, and wide tracks. Its self-assembly system allows for fast, independent assembly of its crawler side frames, carbody, rear counterweights, two hoist winches, and boom components.
The big Liebherr can be transported at just 51 t (46 mt) of weight and 9.8 ft (3 m) of width. Its platform and railings can be folded down and remain connected to the uppercarriage for shipping.
The LR 1400 SX’s cabin is air-conditioned and sound-insulated. A heated and cooled orthopedic seat helps to keep the operator comfortable throughout every shift.
