Grove Debuts 85-Ton GHC85 Telescopic Boom Crawler Crane
Grove’s new GHC85 is an 85-ton (80-metric-ton) telescoping crawler crane intended for North and South America. The manufacturer now offers eight cranes in its 30- to 132-t (27- to 120-mt) GHC series of telecrawlers, and the GHC85 is one of the midsize models. The crane is recommended for utility, road, and bridge applications, pile driving, and assembling other cranes.
Grove says the new GHC85 has the longest boom of its class at 137.7 feet (42 meters). It provides 100% pick-and-carry operation at 0.6-, 1.5-, and 4-degree inclines.
“The biggest advantage of a telecrawler is that you can work efficiently on both even and uneven terrain with solid pick-and-carry charts,” says Grove’s product manager for GHC cranes, J.J. Grace.
A/Symmetrically Extendable Undercarriage
The GHC85’s five-section, full-power main boom extends from 36.1 to 137.7 ft (11 to 42 m). A bi-fold swingaway extension—offsettable at 0, 20, and 40 degrees—helps the crane attain its maximum tip height of 199 ft (60.7 m). An optional, 10-ft (3-m), heavy-duty jib with a 10-degree offset can be stowed alongside the boom. The crane’s maximum single line speed is 360 feet per minute (110 meters per minute).
The telecrawler can be transported to the jobsite in just three loads, although its crawlers can be shipped separately on a fourth trailer. On the worksite, the crane can self-assemble without an assist crane using frame-mounted jacks, counterweight lifting cylinders, and a wireless remote.
The GHC85 has hydraulically extendable undercarriage cross members that can widen its track span. Its three span widths include asymmetrical as well as symmetrical configurations. “The maximum track span is 16.7 ft, but one track could be at 100% and the other at 50%, enabling an operator to maneuver and pick in confined spaces,” Grace says.
The GHC85 has a gross vehicle weight of 198,400 pounds (90,000 kilograms). It comes with 36-inch (914-millimeter) triple-bar grouser shoes. Its ground bearing pressure varies between 13.2 pounds per square inch (91 kilopascals) without a load and 24.9 psi (171.7 kPa) with a full load. The crane has a 57% theoretical gradeability rating.
High Visibility
An EU Stage V/Tier 4 Final Cummins engine with 218 horsepower (164 kilowatts) propels the GHC85 via a two-speed hydrostatic drive. The crawler has a maximum speed of 1.43 mph (2.3 km/h), and can reach 0.55 mph (0.88 km/h) in its creep speed range.
The GHC85’s cabin can tilt up to 20 degrees. Inside is a 7-in. screen that can display the video feed from the camera monitoring the hoists. Rear and right-side cameras also come standard on the crane. Some of its options include a radio remote control and a third hoist for foundation work.
