Contractor Grúas Leman SA has purchased two high-capacity cranes from Liebherr. The Spanish company recently bought a 700-tonne (770-U.S.-ton) LTM 1650-8.1 all-terrain crane and a 700-t LR 1700-1.0 lattice boom crawler, citing an increase in demand for cranes of this class and Liebherr’s safety and crane technology features.

Based at La Pobla de Mafumet, Tarragona, in Catalonia, Grúas Leman plans to utilise the new cranes for wind power and petrochemical industry applications.

Liebherr’s LTM 1650-8.1

Leman’s new, eight-axle LTM 1650-8.1 will start its career working at crude oil reception facilities at the Port of Tarragona, Spain. Afterward, it will perform maintenance on wind turbines and address other wind power projects.

“The LTM 1650-8.1 will close the gap between our large telescopic cranes and the lattice boom cranes,” says Leman Managing Director Samuel Molero. “With its high capacity, easy set-up, and economical transport, it will cover the demands of the market in a single crane model.”

The LTM 1650-8.1 builds on the success of Liebherr’s LTM 1500-8.1 and has 15% to 50% more lifting capacity. The newer crane uses Liebherr’s VarioBallast system, which can hydraulically slew the ballast to alter its radius (and thus the crane’s lift capacity), and VarioBase, which allows for flexibility in its outrigger deployment.

The longer of the crane’s two telescoping boom options can extend to 80 metres (262 feet). The LTM 1650-8.1 features a maximum hoist height of 152 m (499 ft) and a radius of up to 112 m (367 ft) with the addition of a lattice jib.

“Together with improved capacity, VarioBallast and VarioBase, the interchangeable booms and other technological innovations, this model enables us to adapt to the needs of every single job,” Molero says. “And we can do so with the speed and cost-effectiveness that our customers demand of us every day.”

Grúas Leman describes its LR 1700-1.0 crawler crane as the new flagship of its fleet of 50 mobile cranes—90% of which are from Liebherr. “The crane has an innovative design and lots of different configurations which simplifies transport and the set-up process massively, making it enormously flexible and economical,” says Molero. The big crane will begin by installing German wind turbines of more than 5 megawatts of power at heights of up to 165 m (541 ft).

The LR 1700-1.0 has a maximum hoist height of 196 m (643 ft) when set up with 102 m (335 ft) of main lattice boom and a 96-m (315-ft) luffing jib. The crawler’s maximum radius is 160 m (525 ft). The LR 1700-1.0’s state-of-the-art derrick system includes Liebherr’s V-frame, the VarioTray detachable ballast system, and the M-Wagon modular ballast trailer, which can also be used by certain other Liebherr cranes. In fact, the LR 1700-1.0 itself can use many components from its LR 1600/2 stablemate.

Liebherr reengineered the static structure of the LR 1700-1.0’s base machine, which now supports 10 to 15% more lifting capacity. To reduce transport fees, the crane’s base machine transport elements and pivot are all less than 3 m (9.8 ft) wide. The crane is powered by a 544-horsepower (406-kilowatt) engine.
