Transbiaga Employs 3 Liebherr LG 1750 Mobile Cranes At Spain’s Largest Wind Farm
Spain’s Gecama wind farm recently received new help in the form of three Liebherr LG 1750 lattice boom mobile cranes from the crane and heavy transport firm Transbiaga. The LG 1750s are erecting 67 wind turbines at the wind farm in the Cuenca province with 120-metre (394-foot) hub heights to provide energy to the national power grid. Components of the concrete towers weigh up to 255 tonnes (281 U.S. tons). The nacelle with the generator weighs 140 t (154 U.S. t) and the 74-m (243-ft)-long rotor blades weigh 21 t (23 U.S. t).
Transbiaga has plenty of experience with the Liebherr LG 1750. The company has another five already in its fleet. The company says the crane is well-suited for the wind farm because they can travel independently between turbines and have a smaller width than a crawler crane.
"In addition to its good operability, we also chose this crane model because of its high load capacity and mobility, factors that meet the needs and requirements of a wind farm,” says Transbiaga CEO Jon Usabiaga. “We bought the new equipment with the even stronger SX boom system. This means we are also well-positioned for the future generation of wind turbines. The cranes are configured with 165-metre main boom and F-jib."
About The LG 1750
The LG lattice boom mobile crane has a maximum load capacity of 750 t (827 U.S. t) and a maximum hoist height of 193 m (633 ft). The LG 1750 combines the crane turntable and boom system of the LR 1750 crawler crane with an eight-axle chassis with speed-dependent rear-axle steering. The crane is self-leveling for safe hoisting and has a vehicle width of less than 3 m (10 ft).
About The Project
Owned by Enlight Renewable Energy, the Gecama wind farm will be Spain’s largest and will cover 41 square kilometres (16 square miles), with a network of approximately 80 km (50 mi) of roads. It will have an installed capacity of over 300 megawatts, generating around 1,000 gigawatt hours per year, and will save an estimated 160,000 t (176,370 U.S. t) of carbon emissions. The turbines were manufactured by the Nordex Group, which is based in Hamburg and Rostock and is among the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturers.
