Germany’s Ley-Krane Opts For A Rope-Pull Telescoping Boom On Its Newest Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 Compact Crane
Ley-Krane GmbH & Co. KG of Germany has acquired its second Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 telescopic boom truck crane, this time with a rope pull boom instead of the standard Liebherr Telematik boom. The optional configuration, requested by Liebherr’s customers, uses a speedy rope pull mechanism to telescope its boom rather than all hydraulics.
The 50-tonne (50-U.S. ton) LTC 1050-3.1 is known for its ability to enter buildings and operate inside them. The faster rope pull boom can make the job go more quickly, according to Liebherr, allowing work at the facility to resume with less interruption.
“The boss buys the cranes that he would like to work with himself,” says Markus Ley, the sixth-generation family owner of the Gummersbach, North Rhine-Westphalia-based company. “The crane has a great engine and is very comfortable to drive. In our mountainous region, that gives the crane driver a real feeling of safety.”
LTC 1050-3.1 Boom Options The LTC 1050-3.1 crane’s new rope pull boom is 31 metres (102 feet) long. It can provide high lift capacity during the telescoping operation. The rope-pull boom consists of a pivot section and four telescopic sections. A dual-action, two-stage hydraulic cylinder actuates the boom extension. The first stage extends the first section. The second stage uses a two-way pulley block to simultaneously extend sections two, three, and four, which makes the rope-pull boom extend faster than the hydraulic Telematik boom. The five-section Telematik unit, extends from 8.1 to 36 m (27 to 118 ft). It can extend its telescoping sections independently of each other, providing greater lifting capacities and a wider radius. With a lattice jib, the Telematik boom can attain a maximum hoist height of 48 m (157 ft) and a maximum radius of 39 m (128 ft), both somewhat greater than the rope pull boom can provide.Squeezing In
Ley’s LTC 1050-3.1 has all the major options, including a cab which can be telescoped up to an eye level of 8 m (26 ft). The operator can also get a better view of crane setup and operation outside the cab with the optional RemoteDrive remote control system. RemoteDrive can even steer and drive the LTC 1050-3.1. The all-wheel-steer crane is only 2.55 m (8.33 ft) wide and can be lowered to a minimum height of 3 m (9.84 ft), making it a good fit for working in extremely constricted areas.
Liebherr’s VarioBase option allows the LTC 1050-3.1’s outriggers to extend to different lengths in small spaces. “It takes the strain of the operator and enables hoists to be made which otherwise would not be possible in safety,” says Ley.

The Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1
The LTC 1050-3.1 is an all-wheel-drive taxi crane that can carry all of its equipment and ballast at an axle load of 12 t (13.2 U.S. t). The truck crane can reach 85 km/h (53 mph) on the way to the jobsite. A single 326-horsepower (240-kilowatt), six-cylinder Cummins diesel engine powers the crane and is mated to an automatic powershift transmission with a torque converter, which provides a low creep speed for fine manoeuvrability.
