High-Rise Student Halls In The Netherlands Being Built With Potain MDT 319 Top-Slewing Tower Cranes

Dutch construction and engineering company Ballast Nedam has its own crane hire fleet which consists entirely of Potain tower cranes. And through subsidiary Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling, Ballast Nedam recently added two Potain MDT 319 tower cranes that are currently deployed at the Leiden Bio Science Park in the Netherlands to construct two high-rise student halls.

“As far as we were concerned, Potain was the only crane brand for the job,” says Eric Tukker, tower crane specialist at Ballast Nedam. “We have relied on Potain’s quality and innovative technology to keep our projects on schedule for more than 30 years and it is the only brand we have invested in so far.”

Flexible Configuration Is Critical

Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling commissioned the cranes in September 2021, and the company expects the top-slewing cranes to remain on-site until June 2022. The two MDT 319 cranes are lifting loads of between 3.5 and 5 tonnes (3.86 and 5.5 U.S. tons) to construct the structural elements of the two student halls. The jobsite requires Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling to locate the cranes outside of the buildings, and the distance between the center of the cranes must be 52 metres (170 feet). The cranes’ flexible configuration options let Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling assemble one of the cranes at a 54-m (177-ft) height under hook and the second at 64-m (210-ft) height under hook.

The MDT 319

Potain tower crane assembly is quick and straightforward thanks to the Manitowoc CCS crane control system. Designed for complex multi-crane installations, the MDT cranes also take advantage of Top-Tracing III to avoid collisions among overlapping coverage areas. The top-slewing cranes feature a maximum lift capacity of 12 t (13.2 U.S. t) and maximum height under hook of 75 m (242.8 ft). At the full lift radius of 70 m (229.7 feet), Potain’s MDT 319 cranes can lift up to 3.2 t (3.5 U.S. t).

“The 12-t Potain MDT 319 had the perfect specifications for our needs on this project and the trust and confidence Potain has earned from us over the years meant it was a no brainer to add two units with a V63A chassis to our fleet of rental cranes,” Tukker says.
