Italian steel company Acciaierie d'Italia recently signed a deal with Liebherr to purchase four LPS 800 portal cranes for the commercial port of Taranto. The large cranes are completely electrically driven for emission-free cargo handling and are equipped with Liebherr’s Pactronic hybrid drive and SmartGrip technology.

About The LPS 800

The LPS 800 is Liebherr’s strongest and largest portal crane and has a jib length of 64 metres (210 feet) and a maximum lifting capacity of 308 tonnes (340 U.S. tons). The mobile harbour crane has a customisable portal design, including the rail spacing, portal height, wheel loads, and ladder to the slewing platform. The cab offers noise protection, windshield wipers, and air conditioning along with ergonomic design for increased safety.

Efficient Technology

Acciaierie d'Italia ordered a customised portal version which features a detached substructure via a portal which allows the crane to travel along the quay edge on the existing rail and allow space under the portal to be used at the same time. Acciaierie d'Italia’s LPS800s have a four-rope configuration with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 t (159 U.S. t). The cranes are equipped with Liebherr’s Pactronic hybrid power booster, which accumulates sink energy from the electric drive and returns it to the closed hydraulic circuit as pressure. Rather than going to waste, that extra pressure increases lifting power, thus increasing the system’s overall efficiency. As a result, the LPS 800 is capable of handling rates of 2,000 t (2,205 U.S. t) per hour.

SmartGrip grabber technology is a self-learning system that increases material handling capability and prevents overloading which can impair the crane’s structure and shorten its service life. After five lifting cycles, the technology learns how to optimise capacity utilisation. The system then optimises the grabber entry angle and adapts to the material being loaded without the need to change the grabber for various material densities.
